Leg Before Wicket (LBW)
LBW is abbreviated as Leg Before Wicket.
Before understanding what actually is LBW and when it will be given, you need to understand the concept of Line.
SO WHAT IS LINE ?
There are three stumps the first one is off stump, second one is middle stump and third one is Leg stump. We have two ends one is Bowling end and the other one is Batting end.So now draw a straight long 22 yard rectangle stretching from Batting end to Bowling end such that the three stumps are covered. So this rectangle stretching from Batting end to Bowling end is called as LINE.
CHECK OUT THE FIGURE.
Now the conditions for LBW
Generally we can divide the conditions for LBWs in two ways
1. Absolute conditions for giving LBWs
2. Absolute conditions for not giving LBWs
Absolute conditions for giving LBWsThe first and basic thing for LBWs is the ball has to be pitched in line or outside the line. Here outside the line means outside the off stump. Hitting the line means it can hit on off stump or middle stump or Leg stump line. The ball has to hit the wickets after hitting the line or out side the off stump line. After the ball hitting the pitch, the word " Imagination " is used thinking that as if there was no batsman, assuming yourself whether it was going to hit the stumps or not.Hawk eye a special new technical development has been made into modern cricket to know whether the ball ' will be going to hit the stumps or not ' after hitting the pitch. The ball has to hit the pads first. Here pads means it can be either left or right pad. And also here the ball hitting the pads first means, the ball has to hit the pad first before hitting the bat. If it hits the bat first and then hitting a pad second, then you will be not given out. But if it hits the pad 1st and then hitting a bat second after hitting the line or outside the off stump line, you will be given out.
Absolute conditions for not giving LBWs
If a ball pitches outside the Leg stumps, then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.Mind you even if the ball hits the stumps after hitting the pitch outside the Leg stumps, he will not be given out.If a ball doesn't hit the stumps after hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.Mind you even if the ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line he will not be given out.If a ball hits the bat first and then hitting the pad second, then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.Mind you even if the ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line, and hits the stumps, he will not be given out.
THERE ARE ALSO OTHER CONDITIONS FOR GIVING THE BATSMAN LBW OR NOT.
1. When a batsman playing a shot.
2. When a batsman doesn't offer a shot.
When a batsman playing a shot :
When a batsman plays a shot in such a way that he stretches his front leg outside the line or outside the off stump, then now if the impact of the ball with the pad is in outside the line or outside the off stump after the ball hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line then absolutely there will be no chance for the umpire to give him a out.
Mind you even if the ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line and hits the stumps he will not be given out
When a batsman doesn't offer a shot :
If a batsman doesn't play a shot he will be in big trouble always. So now when a batsman doesn't play a shot or doesn't offer a shot in such way that he stretches his front leg outside the line or outside the off stump, so now if the ball hits the stumps after hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line , now even if the impact of the ball with the pad is in outside the line or outside the off stump he will be given out undoubtedly by umpires. Now if a batsman is within the line or in line and doesn't offer a shot, so now if the ball hits the stumps after hitting the pitch in line or outside the off stump line he will be given out undoubtedly by umpires. The reason is simple for giving him out, when a batsman doesn't offer a shot , the impact of the ball with the pad in outside the line or outside the off stump line will not be considered , now if a ball pitches in line or outside the off stump line and hits the stumps he will be given out.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, THESE CONDITIONS HAS TO BE HAPPEN FOR LBW'STHEY ARE :
1. The ball has to be pitched in line or outside the off stump line.
2. The ball should hit the stumps .
3. The ball shouldn't pitch outside the Leg stump.
4. There should be no impact of the ball with the pad in outside the line or outside the off stump line when a batsman plays a shot ( when a batsman doesn't play a shot the impact of the ball with pad in outside the off stump line will not be considered ).

LINE AND LENGTH

LINE :There are three stumps the first one is off stump, second one is middle stump, third one is Leg stump. We have two ends one is Bowling end and the other one is Batting end.So now draw a straight long 22 yard rectangle stretching from Batting end to Bowling end such that the three stumps are covered. so this rectangle stretching from Batting end to Bowling end is called as LINE.

CHECK OUT THE FIGURE

The length of the LINE is same as the Length of the pitch which is 22 yards or nearly 20 meters.
LENGTH :The length of a any point on a pitch measured from a batting end wickets is called as what we say the cricketing Length.

Here the point means is nothing but the ball where it actually pitches. It can pitch on any Length. Mind you the cricketing Length has to be and should be measured from batting end wickets.

The length can be measured in yards or meters. The length of the pitch will be 22 yards or nearly 20 meters.

In general we do have three types of lengths:

1. Fuller Length
2. Good Length
3. short Length

Depending upon the type of bowling the length keeps on changing.

LENGTHS FOR BOWLING :

FULLER LENGTH :
( yorker, over pitch, half volley) The fuller length for fast bowling generally ranges from 0 to 4 yards. 0 to 4 yards means it is measured from batting end wickets to 4 yards. The fuller length for spin bowling generally ranges from 0 to 2 yards. 0 to 2 yards means it is measured from batting end wickets to 2 yards.

GOOD LENGTH :The good length for fast bowling generally ranges from 4 to 8 yards. The good length for spin bowling generally ranges from 2 to 6 yards.

SHORT LENGTH : ( short pitch deliveries) The short length for fast bowling generally ranges from 8 yards to half way. Half way means half of the pitch which is 11 yards => 8 to 11 yards.
The short length for spin bowling generally ranges from 6 yards to half way or 11 yards.

NOTE :Depending upon the nature of the pitches like fast, slow pitches the lengths may vary little bit slightly from pitch to pitch. But the above figures are standard figures.

FOLLOW ON

Posted by Zahid Abdullah | 12:18 AM | 0 comments »

FOLLOW ON :
The word 'FOLLOW ON' has the meaning in its self. You can say that we are using a basic common English meaning of 'FOLLOW ON' in the context of Cricket.
Its a simple concept to understand. The word 'FOLLOW ON' is the domain of Test Cricket. It is not used in ONE DAY format. Before understanding the concept of 'FOLLOW ON' lets understand some basics of Test Cricket.
In general in Test Cricket we do have four innings. They are.
1st innings
2nd innings
3rd innings
4th innings
Let us have the two teams A and B. In general if team A bats in 1st innings then team B bats in 2nd innings. Then again team A bats in 3rd innings. And at last team B bats in 4th innings.
1st innings-----------'A'
2nd innings----------'B'
3rd innings----------'A'
4th innings----------'B'
Now if the 'FOLLOW ON' comes into the party then team B will bat in 3rd innings and team A in 4th innings depending upon the team A's captain decision who makes team B to FOLLOW or not.

So when the word 'FOLLOW ON' comes into the party ?
The word 'FOLLOW ON' exists only when a team batting in 1st innings scores at least '200' runs. The word '200' runs is very important in the concept of 'FOLLOW ON'.
LETS CHECK OUT THE EXAMPLES FOR FOLLOW ON:

EXAMPLE 1 :
Suppose if team A scores in 1st innings ------- 450 runs.
Then the team B say scored -------------------180 runs in 2nd innings.
Now 450-200 = 250 runs.
The team B has to score minimum 250 runs to avoid the 'FOLLOW ON' but it has scored just 180 runs in 2nd innings.
There fore the power of 'FOLLOW ON' goes to team A's captain and if he is interested, he just says, " hey guys just bat again " or " hey guys just FOLLOW ON ".
1st innings-----------'A'
2nd innings----------'B'
3rd innings----------'B'
4th innings----------'A'
Some times the captain of team A may not ask the opposite team to bat again, depends on his match tactics. He may or may not ask the opposite team to 'FOLLOW ON'.
But the captain of Team A gets the choice and power of 'FOLLOW ON', if the opposite team doesn't avoid the 'FOLLOW ON'.
Only the team which bats in 1st innings gets the power of 'FOLLOW ON'.

Lets take other examples for Follow On:

Example 2 :
Team A -----------------1st innings----------450 runs
Team B -----------------2nd innings---------251 runs
Now 450-200 = 250 runs.
Team B has avoided the 'FOLLOW ON' by scoring ( 450-200) minimum 250 runs and in fact scored 251 more than 250 runs.
Now Team A's captain gets no power of 'FOLLOW ON'.

Example 3 :
Team A ---------------1st innings ------------198 runs
Team B ---------------2nd innings -----------150 runs
Now 198-200 = impossible.
There is no question of 'FOLLOW ON' if a team batting in 1st innings scores less than '200' runs.
The word 'FOLLOW ON' exists only when a team batting in 1st innings scores at least '200' runs.
This is what the 'FOLLOW ON' is and the word ' 200 runs ' is how important.

SCIENTIFIC CRICKET

SCIENTIFIC CRICKET
The technology has changed this world and the Cricket was not left behind. The technology has given the new definition to Cricket. The high resolution ultra motion cameras, snickometers, Hawk eye, Zoomers, G.P.S and many more equipments are added to Cricket. It has made Cricket more interesting especially for the viewers and also helping out players, curators, umpires, staff etc. The technology is now the integral part of Cricket and has to be. Without technology you can't name Cricket as Modern Cricket.

SNICKOMETER :It is a electronic device which has been introduced in Cricket especially for the detection of sounds. Even the small decibels of sound will be detected by this meter.I think some sound equipment or sensors are kept in wickets or near by wickets because the batsman stands in crease near by wickets, thereby the sensors sense or detects or catches the sound in and around the pitch.Whether the bat hitting the pad or ball hitting the bat or ball hitting the pad whatever it is, it detects the sound in and around the pitch.Every telecasting company will be having its own control room and everything will be managed from there. whatever the sound waves are created by bat or ball or pad will be displayed in control room and then it will be transfered to our viewing television screens when ever it is required.
Check out the snickometer video.

ULTRA MOTION CAMERAS :In Cricket Earlier we used to have analog cameras which is a traditional one, but now- a- days everything is Digital and not only we have digital cameras, but with high resolution ultra motions.Earlier we used to have slow motion replays with bad quality and resolution. Now-a-days not only we have slow motion cameras with good quality but also ultra slow motions with high resolution and good quality.1. When a batsman makes a century and jumps into the air and punches, it will be delightful to watch him in ultra motion.2. Similarly when a fielder catches a brilliant catch, when a fast bowlers bowl a killing bouncers, when a batsman hits a beautiful fours or sixes and many more, always makes us delightful in watching them in ultra motions.3. The ultra motion cameras also help you in, whether the ball has outside edged the bat or not.

HAWK EYE :
Hawk-eyed----Having very keen sight.

Hawk eye is a computer system used in Cricket and other sports to track the path of the ball. Hawk-eye is used in different departments of the game.
1. LBWs.
2. Wagon Wheels.
3. De spin.
4. Pitch Maps.
5. Beehives.
6. Rail cam.
7. Ball speeds.
8. Reaction Time.
LBWs :It shows would the ball have hit the stumps? Did the ball pitch in line? Did the ball hit the batsman in line?

WAGON WHEELS :

The 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's and 6's that make 50's or centuries are represented by the different colors of the wagon wheel, which shows the areas of the field that the batsman has been targeting.

DE-SPIN :

It helps you in, how far a ball has turned or deviated after pitching, one color shows the actual delivery which has turned or seamed, the other color shows, "if the ball hasn't turned or seamed".

PITCH MAPS :

It shows where the ball has hit the pitch. It shows the complete package of deliveries ' where they have been dropped ', may be pitched or dropped in Good length, full length, short length. And also the deliveries will be represented in different colors. Each color has its own identity representing runs, dots, boundaries, wickets etc.

BEE-HIVES :
It shows how the ball passes the batsman. It shows the complete package of deliveries where they have passed the batsman. Same as the pitch map the deliveries will be represented by different colors. Each color has its own identity representing wickets, runs, dots, boundaries.
RAILCAM :It is a side view shot which shows the differences in speed, bounce. It represents the bowlers variation.
BALL SPEEDS :It also has the ability to show the speeds of the ball at different points. The different points may be from releasing point to before the ball hitting the bat. The points are releasing point, before pitching, after pitching and when the ball hits the bat.
REACTION TIME :It helps you in showing how quick the bowler is, that is in how much time the ball has reached from bowlers hand to the batsman. And also shows you the reaction time of a fielder that is in how much time the fielder has taken his catch.
ZOOMER :Depending upon the lens the Zoom depends. The more the power of lens, the more the Zoom.Zoomer is used in, whether the ball has hit the bat or not. It is also used in, whether the fielder has taken the catch clearly or not, that is without grounding the ball.
Checkout the video.
GPS :GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is the technology which has been recently introduced in Cricket( 2006-2007), it has already been introduced in Foot ball four years ago.It is the equipment which has to be weared by a player on a chest or on a waist or hand. It helps you in calculating the distance travelled by a player on a ground, distance between the players, and also other positions.
EXAMPLE :
1. When a fielder catches a ball by running a far distance. That distance will be calculated accurately by GPS.
2. The distance travelled by the batsman between the wickets can be calculated.
3. In 2007 in a 20-20 match in Australia between Australia and NewZealand, the distance travelled by Micheal Hussey was 3.2 kms and distance travelled by Nathan Bracken was 3.8 kms.

BATTING STATISTICS

Posted by Zahid Abdullah | 11:55 PM | 1 comments »

BATTING STATISTICS
BATTING AVERAGEBatting Average = No of runs scored / No of matches ( outs).

Example :
Batting Average = 46.2.
=> For every match the batsman scores an average of 46.2 runs.Lets say if a batsman has an batting average of 46.2 with 100 matches played, then
=> 46.2 = No of runs scored / 100.
=> No of runs scored = 46.2
* 100 = 4620 runs in 100 matches.
Note :Here if a batsman is not out then that match will not be added, but runs scored by him are added to calculate the batting average.
BATTING STRIKE RATE
Batting Strike Rate = 102.0
=> For every 100 balls the batsman scores 102 runs.
Similarly if batting strike rate is 62.0
=> For every 100 balls the batsman scores 62 runs.
Batting Strike Rate = No of runs scored / No of balls played.
Lets say a batsman has scored 40 runs of 80 balls. Now
=> strike rate = 40 runs * 100 / 80 balls * 100 = 50 runs / 100 balls.
=> A batsman is scoring at a strike rate of 50 at the rate of 100 balls.

Note :The greater the strike rate, the greater the good striker of the ball.
EXTRAS

LEG BYES :The runs which are obtained by the ball not hitting the bat, gloves and hitting any part of the body. Those runs are considered as Leg Byes.
BYES :The runs which are obtained by the ball not hitting the bat nor gloves nor any part of the body. In fact if the ball leaves away from the body with out any contact. Those runs are considered as Byes.

BOWLING

Posted by Zahid Abdullah | 11:50 PM | 0 comments »

BOWLING BASICS
BASICS :Any bowling can be divided in to three parts. They are
1. Run-Up.
2. Bowling Action.
3. Follow Through.
RUN-UP :Run-up is the first part of the bowling. Run-up can be divided in to two parts again. They are1. Start Up and2. Momentum.
START-UP :Start-up is the first part of the run-up. To get into the momentum or pick up the momentum, start-up is the key factor. In any type of bowling without start-up you cannot get into momentum.
1. It is the initial energy of your run-up.
2. It is the booting factor of your run-up.
3. It sets the momentum of your run-up.
MOMENTUM :Momentum is the 2nd part of your run-up. The momentum of your run-up always depends on your legs. The fitter the legs the stronger the momentum.Fitness of bowlers legs is Crucial. Momentum of your run-up also depends on how do you start your run-up, infact start-up.Depending on the type of bowling the momentum of run-up varies1. If you are a fast bowler the momentum of run-up might be faster.2. If you are a medium pace bowler the momentum of run-up might be medium.3. If you are a slow bowler the momentum of run-up might be slower.
BOWLING ACTION :Bowling action is the 2nd part of your bowling. It is the medium or the Crucial point where you stand and deliver the ball on the pitch where you would like to. It is the point where the execution of the ball takes place.
IMPORTANT POINTS AT THE TIME OF BOWLING ACTION :
1. Keep it simple.
2. The bowling action should not be difficult. It has to be simple action.
3. Even if the action is difficult, it should be comfortable for the bowler to bowl.
4. As long as the action is comfortable, the bowler can have any bowling action.
5. Bowlers need to be aggressive at the time of action.
6. The focus and concentration has to be perfect so that the bowler can deliver or pitch the ball on the right area where he would like to.
7. The bowling has to be with straight high arm action generally. It depends on bowlers. Some bowlers have high round arm action.
8. Whatever the energy is created by accelerating momentum of run-up should be utilized in delivering the ball. The speed of the ball depends on this energy.
9. Whatever the energy is created by run-up is transmitted to your arm, wrist and then to the ball at the time of bowling action.
10. If you are the right handed bowler, the left hand, left leg and back of the body are Crucial in maintaining the balance and in transmitting the energy to your arm and wrist. Similarly to left hand bowlers vice-versa.
11. The back of the body has to be bended properly. If you do not bend your back properly, you may not be balanced and you may not get proper speed.
12. The left hand is so Crucial in balancing the body at the time of bowling action. Do not hide your left hand. The action of your left hand should take place naturally thereby balancing the body movement and transmitting the maximum energy to your arm. The left hand of right arm fast bowler can be compared with the tale of cheetah. When cheetah chases the deer it uses the tale so well, so that the balance of the body movement is controlled in such a manner, you cannot imagine.
13. If you are a right arm fast bowler, the left leg is much Crucial than any other part of the body at the time of bowling action. whatever the energy or the force is created by run-up, it is the left leg which balances the entire force or weight of the body and plays a major role in transmitting the created energy to your arm. So the grounding of your left leg on the crease is Crucial. In general the right arm bowlers ground their left leg in straight or 1st slip direction. It also depends on how you bowl and what type of delivery are you bowling. You can ground your leg in which way you are comfortable as long as you do not lose balance and energy at the time of bowling action. The back of the body, the left hand and the left leg are Crucial in generating the speed of the ball.
14. Do not jump in the air too much at the time of bowling action so that you may loose your balance and thereby the energy created by run-up. You can jump in air in which way you are comfortable as long as you do not loose your balance.
15. Since the execution of the ball takes place from bowlers wrist, the wrist has to be bent or bended down so nicely so that the energy which is created by run-up should be completely utilized by the arm and then the wrist. The more flexible the wrist, the more the energy is utilized. At the end of the day it is the wrist from where the execution of the ball happens.
FOLLOW THROUGH :Follow through is the third part of the bowling. It is Crucial as much as bowling action and run-up.It is defined as the drama which is created naturally by a bowler after the bowling action.
IMPORTANT POINTS OF FOLLOW THROUGH :
1. The follow through has to be simple and should not be difficult.
2. It shouldn't be pre-meditated or anticipated action. It should happen naturally or by default.
3. It shouldn't be in such a way that " O.K I am going to jump on right side of the pitch or left side of the pitch or in middle of the pitch " after my bowling action. It is absolutely nonsense. It should happen naturally.
4. It should happen naturally in such a way that the position of the shoulder, position of the hips and the position of right foot( right arm bowler) has to follow the ball after releasing it.
5. After the following of these positions with the ball, the left leg comes into the party and supports the remaining action.
6. Mind you, naturally your follow through has to avoid the middle of the pitch. Because it is a restricted area and Umpire might warn you. Before knowing bowling basics, as a cricket player you have to have some key points, to keep it in mind. They are
1. Fitness.
2. Commitment.
3. Temperament.
4. Approach.
5. Patience.
6. Discipline.
7. Enjoying Cricket rather than thinking of losing or winning.
8. Concentration.
9. Keep it Simple.
These points are extremely important especially for bowlers because as we know, today the Cricket is not a balanced game between the ball and a bat, it has become batsman dominated game and most of the pitches in this part of the world are now batsman favored. Not much is left for bowlers.
FITNESS :It is the fast bowlers who often get injured in modern Cricket than compared to batsman. He needs to concentrate and work hard more on his fitness than any other player in Cricket. He always has to keep his legs fit and strong which is Crucial in run up. To happen this, running is the best evergreen exercise. The shoulders and arm has to be strong and fit enough, which is Crucial in bowling action. Here strong and fit doesn't mean to have the heavy body with great muscles. By naturally you have to become strong and fit. By artificially i.e by going to gyms you can also become strong and fit, but running is always the best natural exercise for fast bowlers. You know its not like the batsman who always stands in crease for whatever time he wants, its you the bowler who should always run for every ball to bowl from a long distance.
COMMITTMENT :Just having the talent is not enough, as a player you have to have commitment and temperament. Lets say on a pitch you are not getting swing, bounce and nothing from hit. And only choice for you is to bowl straight wicket to wicket in line and length. Here comes the word 'commitment', now it tests your commitment, that is how much you are committed to bowl in line and length consistently. We can have other example, if a batsman sledges you in many ways you can loose your patience, then now it tests your commitment towards your patience and discipline.
TEMPERAMENT :It is already said earlier the talent along with temperament is Crucial. Lets a new bowler in a Test Match is bowling to a good batsman. We know a good batsman always attack debut ant bowlers, so whatever the bowler bowls, he is been hit every where on the ground, he was unable to stop him from hitting, he is trying too many things i.e experimenting too many variations, he was unable to stick on one variation or one plan or one strategy which simply implies he was unable to maintain his tempo.Even though he has the talent i.e has bowled so many variations, but didn't controlled his temperament i.e by not sticking to the one strategy or one plan.
APPROACH :Approach is Crucial when you are a new bowler or regular bowler or when you are bowling to a great batsman. when bowlers are new to International Cricket they generally bowl in a normal way, but if they attack the batsman with positive framed mind thats a good approach. As a bowler if you are attacking the batsman continuously and the batsman is still going on you and still if you attack him with confidence thats a sign of good approach. The theory is simpleIf a batsman attacks you, don't get defended its a bad approach. If a batsman attacks you, as a bowler if you still attack them its a good approach.Because the best way to defend or overcome the opposite attack is attack.
PATIENCE :Patience is the important word in every department of the Cricket say batting, bowling, fielding. Lets say in a Test Match as a bowler you are bowling on a particular area outside the off stump consistently and the batsman is leaving the ball continuously, but even if you are still having patience to bowl on that particular area consistently which is a wicket taking area, the batsman may loose his patience and may snick to that and gets out.Similarly this example can be applied to other deliveries like bouncers, out swingers etc.. As a bowler if you are bowling bouncers consistently, the batsman is leaving continuously, but even if you are still having patience to bowl bouncers consistently, the batsman may lose his patience and may hook that and gets out. This is how patience of one player dominates the patience of other player.
DISCIPLINE :Not only for the Cricket players, Discipline is key to success for every sportsman in this part of the world.Discipline in Time maintainence, discipline in fitness, discipline in commitment, discipline in Temperament, discipline in Patience, discipline in Concentration, in other way you can define discipline as the collection of all good things.
OTHER IMPORTANT FACTORS :Enjoying the Cricket game is Crucial rather than playing for win or lose. Ofcourse you always play for win but without enjoying the game you cannot win.At the end of the day one has to lose and one has to win. Everyday you can't win the game. Every one has the talent but it is important how you play on that particular day or on that particular instants. Class, skill and talent are always permanent. But form is not permanent. At the end of the day it is just a game, battle between winning and losing not a battle between life and death.By enjoying the game you can make your head cool and release your pressure which is created by your own. With a cool head you can concentrate more, you can make the game so simple and can work on more strategies. Losing the game is not a factor, how you lose is Crucial. Not losing the game so easily but with tough fighting spirit with the opponents is important, which can be possible by enjoying the most amazing game of this world.
